FORM. (I mean 3D forms....)
If an object has height, width and depth, it is a form. A form can be a man-made, geometric shape that is mathematically precise in all its angles and edges, or it can be a natural, organic form. - this is the Google definition of a form. In this blog, I refer 'A Form' as a 3 dimensional form... and a paper form..(get it?)
We know cube, cuboid, sphere, prism, pyramid, cone, cylinder, are basic three dimensional forms, that we learnt in school. But I know, most of us never cared about researching about forms... right? I mean obviously.. you would think, who cares about forms? right? If you look around right now, you are actually surrounded by the air and thousands of 3D forms (seriously, look around). Every single product around, is a modified form. For example, a regular chair, is basically lots of cuboids of different dimensions joint together or my pencil is a super long hexagonal prism, with a cone on top, and by using a sharpener, fascinatingly, the hexagonal prism gets converted into a cone. (think about that for a while). And there are loads of such examples just in your room.
But there are 3D forms, you might not be aware of. Such as: lemon, hyperboloid, mobius strip, dodecahedron, reuleaux triangle, torous, scutoid. Now the thing is, as 3d modelling and design softwares are being used by millions of people, there are new and weirder 3d forms being made and converted into prototypes. Not all of these are actually useful for most of us, but they can be made for other purposes like building mechanisms, robots, efficient and minimal packaging, etc.
Well, but the reason why I get really excited and curious about forms are because they really make me imagine things to a whole now level, for example, when I notice a rock, or the shell of a tortoise, they are never any modified basic form...they are complex strong structures...(yes)
This made me thinking.. imagine, a square, being pulled up but the ending is not a square, but a triangle.(just imagine that..) or a cylinder that has a circular base but a cuboid on the top surface.
Woha this is crazy.
Hope you enjoyed thinking new stuff!
